Rest and take the 5-6 weeks off the mat. I was back training and rolling well inside 3 months.

I tore my medial meniscus a month ago.  Because my knee has improved steadily, albeit slowly, the ortho suggested I give it more time.  It did, however, lock last night when I pushed my heel to close to my butt.  In the middle of a choke I felt the pop and a sharp pain.   I groaned and looked up to see Ray (Turtle) looking at me with deadpan stare as if to say, "good job moron."  Without a word I agreed in a silent language that only a fellow torn meniscus sufferer could comprehend.

Hopefully it will be in good enough condition to get through the Mundials, then I expect I will get a partial meniscectomy sometime in late August.  Unless they find something else while scoping the Rothman Inst. surgeon says I could be back to full athletic activities in as soon as 3 weeks after surgery.

Good luck w/ whatever decision you make and w/ your Summer.  If you do get the surgery keep me posted.  I'm curious to hear about the results.  By the way, you said your doc said that it will only get worse?  I'm not a doc but I don't think two months of Summer will have that much of an effect (barring new injury).  I would enjoy the Summer rollin.

that was more of a "know your limitations" deadpan expression, rather than a "good job, mron" one.

your guys knees lock? scared to squat down? Its the scar tissue/torn cartilage stuck in there, thats all the meniscus op is for, they remove it, eventually you will have no cartilage. I tore medial in both knees, one severe, I was on crutches for like 2 weeks. Never had surgery, Im not 100%, but i train just as much and still compete. Yoga has helped me a LOT. thats just my experience. btw, the knees dont lock anymore. I think you are still just as prone to injury after the surgery?

I know Ray, but I thought my version  more pithy and humorous.

Yesterday I had ACL, meniscus, bone graft surgery.  Right now it sucks!!  I have this motion machine that keeps my knee moving and this polar ice cooler that constantly keeps my knee cold.  Surgery had to be done.  Search around and you will see that tons of guys have had knee surgery and are still competing.   Best of luck (lucky you just have meniscus)

I'm having my knee 'scoped in 2 weeks.

I thought I'd be awake, getting a local but found out I'm getting KO'd with a general.

I always thought that getting a knee scoped, you could watch it....

Those that have had their meniscus repaired, did you get a local or general anesthesia?

I'm being put out completely from what I understand.  Damn though, I felt so good yesterday while rolling.  Could it possibly have healed a little bit?

That was my dilemma.  I felt so good rolling that I opted against the surgery.  If it acts up, I get the surgery, case closed Wink

I wish I had known about a motion machine.  I had my meniscus repaired, and was required to have my knee locked straight for 6 weeks.  When I first got the brace off, I could barely bend my knee 40%.  Regaining full ROM sucked.  By the way, I was given general anesthesia as well.  I asked the Doc if I could stay awake and watch, but no such luck.
