Actually if you read the bible literally there is no hell, merely on the day of resurrection, non-believers are not resurrected. I would be worried if it were true, an original story, or even remotely a possibility.

hell is a eternal separation from God. that's all. don't worry you'll be be fine.

Revelation 20:10  "...the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet [are], and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever."  The wicked are tormented for ever. 

Revelation 14:10 - 11  the devil and all the wicked "...shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever."

Finally, if Eagleton doesn't "actually read other peoples' books," has he read Dawkins'? Has he read it closely and carefully? Perhaps not, in which case his opinions about it can definitely be dismissed as uninformed and irrelevant. When you are a prominent book reviewer, it's probably a bad idea to state publicly that you don't read others' books.

i was wondering this too.  once again, the faux-intellectuals use snobbery and snark to dismiss questions about their credibility. 

having read the god delusion, it's interesting to see how many people who read it (or claimed to have read it) misunderstand the problems that dawkins has about religion.

I am sorry, but most say we know there is no god, we just can't prove it yet.

Every single time in observable study life comes from life, every single time.  Yet the reason people say, "well it did come from non life on one occasion" would have had to be many many many occasions however, as the laws of probability would suggest that the first time this "miracle" occurred the resulting life probably wouldn't have had reproductive ability, or the ability to evolve, "and we just don't know how", is because they start with a tenet that is scientifically unprovable as you just admitted.  This tenet is that there is no god, and since there is no god then such and such follows.  This is clearly not scientific method.  What would be scientific is to say: well, we do know that without exception life comes from life, it is possible that in some extremely unusual situation it may have come from non life, but from right now the options are there was either some external force, or a very extremely unusual event that we cannot understand that broke all of the observable laws.

Here's my favorite comment:

As a Christian, I am complete unpersuaded by evolution. I don’t agree with others here that Christianity and evolution are compatible. The Evolution theory is contrary to Christianity for these reasons.

1. Randomness. The God in the Bible says everything is created and planned by him. By the seventh day, all the work is done. There is no more evolution involved.

2. Natural Selection. Same as 1. God has finished his work. Nothing left to see here. There maybe some basis for micro-biological evolution, but it is a minor detail. Let’s not extend it to the creation of species and man.

Conclusion. The Bible does not contradict scientific research. There haven’t been a lot of science in Evolution. It’s mostly faith of another kind. Don’t let the scientific talk fool you.

I think the Catholic Church is completely wrong about Evolution. How can they not see through the basic scientific (and philosophical) arguments of Evolution?

As Richard Dawkins points out, there are many scary, contradictory, and rather disturbing passages in the bible.
