I'd like to know how to execute this closed guard sweep. Here you can see Xande use it against Marcelo at the 2 s mark in this video - http://youtube.com/watch?v=O1JCF3YlAOc .

When I 'kick' my opponent around the shoulder area he doesnt budge. I'm 6'3 220lb so you'd think this technique would work well for me... Am I supposed to pull his pants at the knee?

    Any help is appreciated

    thanks

I'm sure someone can break it down better than I can, but basically it's all timing.  You have to do it as your opponent is a little off base leaning that way.  If he's sitting comfortably in your guard, it's not gonna work very well unless you are really strong.

The key to this sweep (like many moves) is in the set up, not the actual movement of the sweep...
This description is for sweeping your opponent toward your left side:

While opponent is in your closed guard shift your hips so that the middle of your butt is over his right knee (do not open your guard, just use your thighs and  grips) as your opponent goes to readjust his base THAT is the time to go

I looked at the Xande video a couple of times and it only really show the moment where he goes but if you look closely you will notice that his hips are in fact off to the side.

“The mechanics are very simple. It consists of breaking the adversary’s posture with a kick to the armpit. In order to perform this kick, one must make a slight change in the angle of the hips, so that they create a better lever. As you achieve this break of posture, the opponent’s lower body gets lighter, enabling the reversal with the grip on the pants, on the same side as the leg of the kick.

The other detail is the positioning of the base-foot; it must be fixed on the ground and close to the opponent’s shin. By raising the foot, the lever is lost. There is a variation, putting that very same foot on the foe’s hip. The secret to this sweep is the timing, for if you just execute it, the adversary will be rigid and strong; so it’s necessary to feel they are relaxed and surprise them right then. Another advantage of this sweep is that the opponent doesn’t feel comfortable moving, which makes them, in their anxiety, leave room for other attacks.”

If I'm not mistaken Xande explains this sweep himself on the Arte Suave 2 DVD.

This is one of my fav's.  I might just add that the angle of the leg chop is important.  Kind of in one motion, you turn your hips and swing your leg high into his armpit in the direction not just sideways but up towards the head.

That sweep is the first one (actually, the first two) in Saulo's BJJ Revolution series ("Volume 4: The Guard"), to be specific, I'm looking right at it.

Some good explanations.  Saulo emphasizes both the hip placement (it is a sweep designed to take advantage of people trying to put the knee "in the middle of the butt" as they start to open the guard) and the timing/leverage (you go right when the guy has put his knee in the middle and begins to push off against your abdomen/chest).

Saulo says just make a basic hook grip on the pants by the knee.  Grips.  Hip scoot.  Crunch to set up your momentum.  Swing the leg.  Roll into mount.

Great explanations here.  I use this sweep all the time.  Great go-to move, very low-risk.
