C'mon Dan, I know you and your brother love bjj just a bit more Smiley

Seriously, I love reading your insights on both sports.  I have taken to heart what you (or maybe it was your bro) said about starting your children out in judo.  I have three young kids and when they get a bit older, that's exactly what I will do...

But if you have never trained at a top BJJ school and then a TOP Judo school, like San Jose State.. then you dont know how hard Top Judo really is.

    Key point right there Dan.

I'm not arguing the point that top level Judo schools train extremely hard and in almost all cases harder than even the toughest BJJ school.

I'm just saying that it seems everyone thinks that all Judo schools train harder than BJJ schools....that's just simply not true.

    I agree with that!!

"C'mon Dan, I know you and your brother love bjj just a bit more "

I do love JJ.. But throwing someone right off the grips perfectly and slamming them has its rewards too!!

I would start them around 6 years old.. I started when I was 4 almost 5 and I spent most of my time running around the mat getting in trouble.. Smiley  My first comp, I was 6 and got beat up... lol

Training Judo once a week for about a year got me in much better shape for jiujitsu than traning only jiujitsu for 7 years did.

I also think Rhadi had mentioned a while back that competing at the highest level in ADCC felt like nothing compared to competing in judo.

Take it for what its worth.

Thanks- my oldest is only 4, and I still think he lacks certain coordination (especially to break fall, etc)- will definately look to start him at 6!

To the minute.  In detail.  Were you pulling, or being pulled?  How many calories were expended?  What was your body using as it's primary fuel source?  Did said training effect your aerobic capacity?  Anaerobic?  What levels of lactic acid buildup did you experience?  What about compared to equal time spent wrestling?

Without the proper means of measurement, I don't think your claims can be accepted.

I've been doing BJJ steadily since 98
At the time i started doing judo i was doing BJJ 3x a week, for 1 1/2 hours on 2 days, and 3+ hours on saturdays.  I just substituted one of the 1 1/2 BJJ classes for the same time in judo.
Before that, in previous years when i wasn't working full time, i was training BJJ 3-4 times a week, 2 classes back to back on the weekdays that i'd train, plus saturdays, plus sundays. And i still don't feel i was in the shape i was when i started doing judo and am now because of it.

Of course, the aches and pains that started from doing judo just once  aweek also started up.  That was the other side of judo that BJJ just didn't give me.  :/

But whatever, right?  Thats just my experience.
