Do not read further if you don't want to know any show results... but I thought this one was relevant as it pertains to a fellow forum member and nice guy.  And remember, last year I told you all about Scarola getting sub'd, leaving the show, and getting kicked outta Serra's and got totally bashed, called a liar, insulted, etc. etc. so my info is legit.

Forum member and BJJ brown belt Dan Simmler gets beaten pretty bad in the first round of the show, so he is unable to make it into the "show" itself.  His record was 0-0 going in, and reportedly Dana's commentary on the show will be a tad harsh about guys who have no experience thinking they can jump into the UFC are delusional.  Apparently Dana says Dan Simmler has been to several try-outs and been a pest about getting on the show, but has not taken the time to do any fighting in preperation.

The above is factual, what I'm also told (but cannot confirm) is Dan Simmler's jaw was broken in the fight.  Anyone friends with or know him, care to enlighten us?  Hopefully this young kid goes out and gets some local, lower level fights and then brings his awesome submission and BJJ skills back to the octagon.

Usually by the way of most reality contracts  he has to stay mum until his episode airs or Uncle Dana will be wearing Dan's new school on his pinky.  Also another thing that I can't understand is that mmajunkie.com I believe will have a guest commentator that can't be revealed because he makes the house which means he had won his first fight. Can this guy get in trouble for spoiling his episode before the season eventhough his results have not been posted? They will not release his name until his episode has aired but I would not want to risk pissing off the big guy. I mean if I had a chance to get on the show, I would be drinking two helpings of the koolaid and even tell people I practice "UFC"!

Since Dan has been rumored to have been on the show, has since been posting on here and said that he was not in the TUF house, and they announced that they were bringing in 32 fighters to compete for 16 spots...I don't think that it's a surprise that he lost his fight to get in the house. He has really good BJJ and has been a solid competitor for years now so I'm sure that if he decides to committ to MMA he will have some success. I hope the broken jaw is just a rumor because that is a shitty injury to have but either way good luck to Simmler in the future.

I think he may have done some amatuer MMA, but i'm not sure.

I've seen him compete few times in BJJ and no-gi comps...he's pretty good in that arena.  I hope he bounces back and tries MMA again if that's where his heart is.  Good luck, Simmler.

Just a question, maybe someone in the know will have the answer.  If Simmler did have his jaw broken does the UFC cover the initial expense along with any future surgery that is needed along with physical therapy if need be.  If he can't assume his day job(Don't know if he had one or not) would they be liable to cover his bills until he could return to work.

I had a a student tell me about this post, I was under the impression it was bashing me, glad to see it wasnt, it really means a lot to me that I have support from my peers. Thats why I post on this forum because I feel there are more people who are atually in the sport rather than others that are couch potato MMA bashing types.  I dont want to get in trouble for talking, so I promise Ill make a post the minute the fight is over and answer any questions you guys might have.

What I can say based on what was posted about Dana, and I hope its not true about what he says, I have NEVER been a pest, I have tried out twice, I went to the TUF 3 tryouts and participated only to have something to do and support 3 of my teammates that were looking to get in. After the 4 or 5 rounds of cuts, I was sitting in the office interviewing having made it through and really having no interest at the time, and my teammates had been cut.
I tried out for this season and they invited me out, I didnt make a tape, I didnt call and bother anyone, I didnt even act like the typical cocky dick,  that always gets associated with our sport and MMA. I was humble as can be, I hope everyone supports me and my future, it has been a very tough road these last 8 weeks and Wed is going to be tough as well. Promise Ill post a reply for you guys Wed explaining my leading up, during and at and after the show. i can only tell what you have seen or has been aired, thats it, dont want to get introuble.

Thanks for the suport, it means alot.

The fact that you went out there and laid it on the line is a big deal. It sucks it had to be on national TV, but that's how a fight goes sometimes. It happens and this is a sport where people get hurt. Nothing you can do but hold your head up and realize you took a chance many only dream about.

Hope the jaw heals up quickly.

Any plans to continue to fight mma?  Or is it grappling only going forward?

Dan Simmler is a standup guy, I have been his roomate in tournaments, and I have been his adversary in tounaments, and all I have to say is that he is cool, and an honorable opponenent.  He is awesome at BJJ and Judo and his record speaks for himself, I thought i say a highlight were he went for  a flying armbar but maybe it was someone else.  i am glad that you guys don't bash him as he is cool and he has put it on the line, which is more than most including myself can say.  Dan, best of luck if you decide to follow an mma carreer, hope you feel better from the broken jaw.  Before any of you judge him, hust remember cro cop got crushed by a BJJ BB with a mouth kick.  Heal up simmler

What was interesting was the expressions on everybody's faces, not from the ferocity of the KO, but from the noises Dan was making as he was coming to.  I think it demonstrated the humanity fighters have for one another. It appeared to be a wake up call for the guys there that you could really get hurt, and thats what it sounded like. Glad Dan was not hurt worse.

    Hey,

So that wasnt as bad as I thought, I honestly didnt remember much. I found it kind of funny actually that I had no idea where I was.

I dont remember the flying whatever that was, I think triangle, and I dont remember anything else pretty much either.

The fiirst thing I remember was at the hostpital. So, I have a deviated septum in my nose, cant breath good at all with out a breath right strip, I had one on and right before my fight, I was told I couldnt wear it. I wasnt given a good reason, just that I couldnt, so as a result, I was breathing through my mouth the whole time, that just made things worse when I got hit. My mouth was wide open and I broke my jaw in three places. two on the left, one on the right.  It was very painful to say the least.

One week after I got home to the day I decided I was going to train "Light" with a student,  and I took his back and he pushed off and his head smashed me under the jaw with the back of his head, rebreaking the jaw. The hostpital is literally across the  street from the school and I was kept over night and had surgery the next day. They put two small plates, 4 screws and wires back to keep it shut. For a little over 7 weeks I had nothing but shakes and tomato soup. It was horrible. I lost about 20 lbs and now I am waiting to get the ok to spar and get back to the grind. Ill be back and do better.

I am sorry that I couldnt have done better, I was happy to get it over with and see what I did and what mistakes I made and where I can improve. Thanks for the support.

It wasn't as bad as i imagined.  You had a good rd 1 and got caught with a nice shot in rd 2.  The ref could have came in quicker to prevent 2 extra shots but, it looked like the damage had already been done.  The sounds you were making made that show real, it was like you were in some serious agony and I was like damn, i hope everything works out for him.  I hope Dana didn't say the things he was quoted as saying because that would make him an even bigger douchebag than i already thought he was.  Now back to my question, did the UFC pick up the tab for your medicals?  When you re-injured it did they pick up that tab since it was related to the injury that occurred due to your participation of the UF.

I'm in agreement with pretty much everyone on here when I say that was great first round.  That fella has some nasty wrestling and you nullified it, showing a lot of strength in your clinch game and obvious dominance on the ground.  I don't know you personally, but based on the opinions and words of my teammates Dan and Bobby, I'd expect to see you back and more determined than ever.

Why would the UFC pick up his medical tab?

Dan, I have so much respect for you.  You got caught, which sucks, but you looked good, you put in on the line, and you carried yourself well.  Man, I love the fact that you weren't acting like a badass, trying to show how tough you were.  You were relaxed, and calm.  You were very Jiu-Jitsu.  It sucks that it ended the way it did, but I can assure you that you have nothing to be ashamed of.

    Dan,

I'm a big fan of yours and was upset that you got hurt in your fight.  You clearly won the first round.

If you choose to pursue MMA, I hope you have the chance to show everyone how good you are.

ONE question, was it the first punch that actually broke the jaw OR was it the 3 hard shots (the stupid fucking ref) you took on the ground before it was stopped?

Hope you heal up fast...and come compete in the BLACK FLY! Thumbs Up

The UFC did pick up the tab for the injuries, they didnt have too but they did and I was greatful for that.

As for the punch, the original broke the left side of my jaw , the next to broke in two spots on the other side. The jaw broke on both sides at the wisdom teeth and on hte right side by the hinge. Sucked but it happens. Thanks for the good words.

Dan is a great guy and a good friend. He and I worked together for two years and quit on the same day. While I’m still behind a desk Dan has established a successful BJJ school and has dedicated himself to competing in MMA and BJJ full time. He is living his dream and it takes a lot of guts to do something like that. I think it would take a lot more than a broken jaw to keep him from fighting again. Serra guys have a nasty habit of coming back from tough losses and I don’t think Dan will be any different. I would offer you good luck in the future but I don’t think you really need it.

And usually, the shows have insurance that covers inuries that happen while fighting in the event.  In Florida, it's mandatory.

Hopefully you will stay off the mat and heal up. That has got to hurt. But you'll come back stronger.

I think Herb Dean was way late in stopping the fight. 3 shots on the ground when
Dan was out on the punch from the feet?  That made me angry to see him allow Dan to get hit like that.

And to be honest, I was way more creeped out by the beard than I was by the punch. Beards creep me out.

I thought he looked really good in the first round.  I felt he looked more skilled than a number of guys that made it into the house.  It kind of seemed that the first round went so well for him that he came out a little too relaxed in the 2nd and that's when he got caught.  I could be wrong, but that was the impression I got watching the fight.  Anyways, good fight Dan.  If you choose to continue with MMA, I think you'll have a bright future in it.  I know a little of what you went through.  I had surgery to correct my sleep apnea 9 weeks ago.  They broke my jaw in 4 places (upper and lower jaw both sides) and advanced it forward.  I was wired for 5 weeks, and I'm just getting back training these last 2 weeks.
