the better the shape we're in, the less athsma shold affect us.
good cardio exercise strengthens the lungs.
luckily sulfites dont bug me, so wine and all that other good stuff
are def on the menu
primatene mist will amp you up, dont be afraid to try it in a jam
its saved my arse on several occasions

Yeah unfortunately the only common factor with me so far on asthma attacks is exercise. Does that mean I should be fat and lazy? Cause I can so do that.
Hah!
Ok, I have mild asthma, as in I don't have to keep inhalers stashed all over the place. The last time I had an attack was at a tournament that I shouldn't have been at, fighting in the men's divisions, all because my boyfriend at the time talked me into showing up at a tournament without training behind me. Terrible idea. I remember laying on the ground with my throat constricted, trying desperately to get just a lungful of air, listening to him babble some crap about how I'd "looked good out there". Ugh.
So yeah, it's not fun.
My asthma was worse in Nashville, and then it got better in Boulder, and it's been even better in recent years. When I left Nashville, I left a lot of mildew, horribly polluted air, and roach dung. I'm allergic to all of these things. When I moved here (MD), I started regular cardio exercise, with both long duration periods and short sprinting periods worked into each session (running or swimming). I also started eating about two heaping tablespoons of freshly ground flax seeds every day, and flax is supposed to help asthma. I drink a fuckton of milk, both dairy and soy, and eat a lot of cheese. Anyway, things which might have helped me:
Regular mixed pace cardio.
Avoiding airborne allergies.
Ground flax seed.
Dinky dog how does the ground flax seed work?

Not a fucking clue, Eddie. I started taking it as an alternative (albeit short-chain) omega acid source, since I can't eat fish. Hippy information sources have since told me that it's good for asthma. Whatever. No harm done, as I know it has the omega fatty acids I'm after.
I'm sidelined, Neckcranker, as I have been for TWO BLOODY MONTHS. Only now I can drink. That's most of it.

Happy early Summer. How all you fellow asthmatics making out?
I'm doing pretty good my own self, but sucking wind in the conditioning classes--it's getting better...

I caught SARS from our resident lab Asian. Of course. Other than that, it's been smooth sailing. I return to BJJ this week after... crap, nearly three months without.
That
should be hilarious.

I had shoulder surgery 3 weeks ago and can't train so I've been running outside...which sucks in DC humidity btw.
Did you all know it's common for asthmatics to have an asthma attack while coming out from being under anesthesia? Yeah I didn't know that til I tried to wake up and couldn't breathe. Good thing I had told the nurse I was asthmatic before I went under so she knew to get my inhaler out of my purse (surgery wasn't in a hospital it was an outpatient surgery center).
p.s. DD, I am SO jealous you get to go back this week! I've been out since Pan Ams, March 28 (well I did train a couple times before I found out my shoulder was actually torn, but I was in pain and unable to train normally so that doesn't count in my head).

I have cold weather/excersise induced athsma. Its under control now..like almost nonexistent actually but it was real bad 3 years ago. Came out of nowehere too. I learned that before i would train to take deep breaths of air with my mouth and hold it in the lungs, so that they would warm up. I would repeat 3 or 4 times and i'd be good to go.
Also i did the Advair thing for 3 months until my DR found out about the whole cancer thing. Took me off of it ASAP. It did, however, practically cure me.

mAn! Yeah, I forgot about that. Trying to run when it's cold outside = pure, rapid death. No faster way to bring on an attack, for me.

A buddy of mine who also trains turned me onto, Super Quercetin. The brand he uses is made by Blue Bonnet...
http://www.bluebonnetnutrition.com/vitamin_c/super_quercetin.html
He swears by it, so I am going to give it a shot. As of now, my Asthma is about the same. Staying on the meds, avoiding dairy and I have some days that are better than others.
I will let you guys know how the SQ works.
