Am I wrong to be upset with this?

Am I wrong in feeling offended when people who can demonstrate moves against a non resisting opponent think they deserve their blue belt? I can do every one of those moves against someone who isn't resisting too, but dont think that should be a measure of whether someone is ready to advance their belt rank.

Isn't the point of BJJ to use it against people who ARE resisting? In that I feel like Dr. Rey's test, as much as it angers me to watch, is more legit than any test demonstrating basic moves against what amounts to a dummy.

<Me> How did you know I'm thebaadtouchh? <goatfury> Easy. You're the ugliest MFer in here.

Anyone remember Helio protesting all the high ranked jiu-jitsu belts by wearing a blue belt?  Now you can get one on the internet...does not make sense.
Illegible.

Really the best way to deal with this abomination is for the BJJ community to openly heap contempt on the trademark term "Gracie Jiu Jitsu," and not accord it the same status as BJJ.

The irony is that Rorion is so focused on "self defense" because you can't hide techniques in competition.  Modern BJJ schools teach you everything up front.  In order to try to keep a money-milking cult, Rorion has had to go back to that TMA bullshido about "secret techniques" you get only at high levels, which aren't useable in competition because they are "too deadly."  Same old martial arts snake oil that BJJ was supposed to go against.

Man, I thought the same thing. I remember that.  Wasn't it due to him not liking the fact that a lot of schools where emphasizing the sport aspect of bjj?  Which is weird to me...without the sport aspect of bjj where would we all be?  Where would the art be?

I would think one would be proud of a legacy that has turned into such a great, highly competitive, and still very difficult sport.

i once watched pedro sauer give a blue belt test. it was a joke. you just showed him how to do certain moves without your partner resisting. he pretty much walked the guys through it and they all passed in the end.
to me, blue belt means you have a good grasp of the basic techniques so it makes sense that a blue belt test wouldnt be too diffcult.

Do you train at the main academy makowon?

If so, how do people there view this kind of business practice?

I don't mean to speak for him, but Phil gives away moves to the community for free.  Of course it's sort of a form of PR but it also improves the wealth of knowledge within the BJJ community.

If he started giving away belts online, I would probably be pretty discouraged, and would consider whether or not that was the right place for me.

im sure any self respecting instrcutor who got a hold of the people
who were signing and being certified through that system
would immediately demote to the level that they are rolling and feel wise.
