Dr. K I feel that my messages to Yemaso will serve to motivate him and in turn you will have to step it up and your game will improve too. Trust me, I know what is best for you.

I feel that there is a real lack of understanding about what steroids do on this forum.

Most top level guys do it because it allows them to train more and recover faster. It's not a substitute for discipline or technique.

The type of steroids most advantageous to bjj aren't going to put a bunch pf weight on you so lets stop using that as a barometer.

I think this is a stupid discussion anyway.

    Who cares?

It's just as unfair that some people get to train with guys like Tarsis and Galvao and others have to train with instructors who only have purple belts. Maybe we should outlaw that?

There are countless sacrifices people make to be the champ. Assuming the risk of adverse steroid side effects is just one sacrifice amongst many that these guys make. And statistically speaking its not really a bad bet to take.

Props to Pipelayer for being real.

Consider the case for a guy who is Pipelayers size.

The majority of guys who train are bigger than a guy who weighs around 145 lbs.  Training at a high level with strong guys means the chance of injury is higher than others who get to train with guys that are their own size or smaller.

So, for a guy who weighs 145 lbs. the small chance of adverse side effects from steroids coupled with the decreased chance of injury due to the extra size and strength gains makes it a reasonable choice.

Anything that keeps your body in tip top shape decreases your chance of injury. For any top bjj guy steroids is a good gamble to take because it speeds recovery of injury and lessens the chance of injury occurrence.

BJJ itself is more dangerous than steroids. Most bjjers I know who are purple belt and above have had a major injury and frequently a surgery too. All have nagging chronic injuries that they deal with every day.

I would say by purple belt you have 25% chance of having to undergo a knee surgery. I don't think there is a statistic comparable to steroid use that is as bad.

Lets all stop being snivelling little babies about this.

I dont feel like anyone should ever try to cover up or hide or lie about thier roids use. i did a cycle a year and a half ago, got me  kinda chubie. When ppl would ask me wahts going /on, why are you getting so big? i would say: "IM on steroids"   I just dont care if ppl lose respect for me or what ever. it helped me in so many ways. im thinking about another...most ppl who kick ass or do really well have done it but so what...i dont hold it against them , they just  want to get better.

I guess if one good thing did come from this post it's that a world class competitor has come clean about using roids.

Jeff, I would say that you've gotten noticeably bigger over the course of your grappling career (specifcally more recently) but then again you came up during your teen years and now you're an adult. It's also not to say that you've gotten really bulky either. At 5'8" you've never looked to be more than about 160 lbs max.

I respect your honesty on the matter even though I'm personally against steroid use. That being said, I also can't question your skills because you've already proven yourself for years before even trying the stuff.  I think you could have done just fine without them but if you think it gives you a competitive advantage and there's no rule in our sport that calls it illegal then you really have done nothing wrong. Coming out about it will put a question mark in some people's minds, especially if you win a close match, but it's better to be hated for what you are than loved for what you're not.

And yes, I'll still buy your DVD when it comes out.

What most find as a let down is the fact that jiu jitsu was based upon the idea that the weaker man could prevail.  The evolution of the sport has changed that.

I don't think it has changed that. As a martial art, the smaller and weaker individual that is trained in BJJ still has some advantage over a larger and stronger individual that is not trained in BJJ. Just as the founders intended. The sport  that has evolved from the martial art is an environment where both individuals know the techniques so strength and size become a factor again. I would have to say that anything above a high level blue or purple belt (even one that only trains sport specific BJJ techniques) would have a significant advantage on the ground over most people that do not train BJJ even in situations where there is a relatively large size difference.
