My friend just called me to tell me that he heard the following on WHYY (our NPR station):
Philadelphia legislature is proposing a ban on fixed gear bikes.
BHWAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHA, another reason why Philly is one of the greatest cities.

All of the hipsters I know that ride bikes make sure to never ride fixed gear. Why; because they are trying to bring the whole thing down from the inside.

When does the fixed gear bike become "hipster"? When it no longer has coaster brakes?
Note to self: buy children new bikes.

Fixed gear bikes don't have a free wheel...
Most of the dudes I've seen riding them from 15th and Market to 45th and Market don't even have any brakes

Not to burst the hipster hate bubble, but fixed gear bikes rock. And the "brakes" are the fixed cog. Now excuse me while I squeeze into my tight jeans, drink a PBR and do lines with some girls that look homeless.
But watch out if you ride any bike in Philly - police just decided to start enforcing the existing highway code. Saw a bunch of food delivery guys getting $50 tickets for riding on the sidewalks. Running a red light or failing to stop at a stop sign is $100+.

While I think there's a chance that'll be too strictly enforced, I also know that at least once a week I almost hit some jerkoff on a bike with my car because he doesn't follow traffic laws and a month ago, one almost hit me while I was crossing a street and took off cursing at me after he blew a red light at 23rd and Walnut. Seriously, f**k those cocksuckers. Since those traffic laws are being enforced, what if I hit one of them because they've ignored a light, etc? where does that fall legally?

Some of my old roommates friends SAY they like to go out and get chased by police vehicles and then ride up the wrong way streets to lose em.
I'm not ready to don a matching keffi for a moonlit bike ride that ends bonnie and clyde style, though I do wish more of them ended up shot.

The bike I own is a cruiser. No gears. And I follow all traffic laws (while riding my Schwinn®). I like how the typical douchebag (SEE Turkey) rails on cyclists breaking local/state traffic laws, when they UNDOUBTEDLY on a daily basis commit moving violations. Douche.

I know that I am labeled as a hipster to most of you (undeservingly so, as I have straight edge tattoos I am officially thought of by hipsters as a "hardcore straight edge jock") but if you get the chance, confront them always. in LA i pulled out in front of a fixie from a parking space, but i saw him coming and there was PLENTY of space between us. he began throwing his arms up in disgust, etc etc and shouting and cursing so I stopped my car got out, verbally belittled him and physically threatened him. i may have lost my dignity in flipping out in the middle of heliotrope dr but he looked like he was going to cry and kept a steady 15 feet between us so it was worth it.
