I was not aware of this disorder until one day a student openly admitted that he was bipolar. I was just covering for my instructor at the time and didn't have much control of student enrollment or I would have refunded him and sent him on his way. I realized his bipolar disorder would only lead to two options, him hurting others or him getting hurt. He was just a white belt. He didn't last very long and quit a few months after training. My problem was not with him though. I'm more concerned about the students who never openly admit their disorder and fly under the radar.

bipolar disorder can present itself in a number of different ways and, as with all mood disorders,  cases have a wide spectrum of severity.  there are plenty of people with bipolar disorder who are prescribed mood stabilizers to help them remain normally functioing individuals.  the reaction to throw the person off the mat seems pretty unnecessary based only on their decision to share their condition with people at the school.  if they arent able to manage it and their behavior is innapropriate then that becomes a seperate issue, but i would think that would be true for any student

This is correct.  There are plenty of bipolar people who are perfectly capable at functioning throughout the day.  If they didn't tell you they were bipolar, you may never even know.

Do you know how many batshit crazy people there are in BJJ already??  Many BJJ chicks, in particular, are some of the most unstable human beings I have ever met.

How would you react if you found out that someone at your academy was HIV positive?

    Just wondering.

It's just a bad combination. I'm not saying the person with bipolar disorder is bad but it makes for lots of bad situations. When I talk about a person with the bipolar disorder I mean one that is not properly medicated at the time of training. I'm an eyewitness to a purple belt with bipolar disorder off meds abusing white belts. No troll job. That is my problem and my personal situation of this matter. I just thought people with have more insight on this matter.

bottom line is that it is not any of your business if a given student of yours is bipolar.  This is not something they should feel obligated to share.

however, a person's actions on/off the mat should be a factor in wether or not they are allowed to be/remain a student.  if the student in question acts a fool then he/she should be removed as a result of their actions.

90% of people involved in bjj have serious mental health issues. The other 10% are fags.

He was counseled on numerous occasions. He has been removed since and probably coming to a school near you! I don't have to deal with his antics anymore.
