How do I escape/stop people from going to the deep half
« on: April 03, 2010, 03:59:00 PM »
Hey dudes,
I'm having a lot of good matches these days. The thing that people always get me with though, is the deep half. What I'm I supposed to be doing when people go there? The last time a purple belt did it and it FELT like he had like a "baby lockdown" on my ankle to keep me from freeing it.

I usually end up there when I'm passing with the knee in the middle from a combat bass position....I saw something in the Saulo University Jiu Jitsu book on it, but I'm not understanding it....Any links to vids you might have would certainly help. Much respect y'all.

Oversimplified answer:
Smash with a crossface and get the outside underhook.

Watch Jeff Glover's DVD (if you want to make a purchase) or watch lots of his matches to see how he's setting it up.

I've been stopped by having someone cup my chin and basically try ripping my head off.

If I have the underhook, I crossface.  If he has the underhook, I control his other wrist/ sleeve to stop him from going under me.

You could also try taking your pants off.

Where?  Sounds pretty strict.  I'd say you're better off.

My little brother is a parago brown belt and learned deep half from Jeff, I have worked with him a decent amount on deep half. The cross face underhook is not a great plan on a skilled deep half guy for a few reasons. It is ok and slows the game but usually wont allow a pass. Frequently it stale mates.

1. If you are training no gi and you sink the underhook the guy will darce you or at least set it up and you will have to scramble and start over.

2. A good guy will hide his far arm

3. A good guy will position his head so that you have put yourself in a unstable position on top while you try to dig it out then you get swept.

one of the best ways is really to step over. watch Ryan Halls fight against GLover in ADCC.

..do a monson choke on the head and use your free hand to drag their legs to the ground. once their leg touches use the free leg to kick the bottm leg and free yours and pass. make sure to monson choke so their chin in pointing away cross face style.

avoid a pummeling war you will lose.

I'm no expert but...

I always try to get the underhook and try and back out of deep half and get into an esgrima pass. Its the safest option for me stepping over works to if they aren't as good as you are.
