Hydration questions.
« on: March 07, 2011, 07:27:59 PM »
I'm horrible at staying hydrated before, during, and after class. I understand the importance, when I am properly hydrated I can roll much longer, tire less, and recover faster. But what is proper hydration? How much water should be drank before class, during, and after? What is the best way to hydrate for morning classes, when the body is typically not hydrated well?

I posted a similar post on the ask nphocus thread, because that guy knows his s**t. However if anyone else  can chime in here, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

The easiest way to know is to check out your urine.  You should be peeing clear before class even starts.  That means throughout the day, you should be drinking a few liters of water.  If you don't start class fully hydrated, you can't really make it up after you start training.

Morning classes are a little harder.  You just have to get up earlier and get in at least a liter before class starts.  That's what I would do for 6 am classes anyway.

The old rule about drinking eight 8 oz glasses of water a day is a joke.  I drink that by noon, at the latest.  No kidding.

They make these cool scales now that calculate your body fat %, your body fluid % along with accurate weight.  I would suggest getting one of those.  An average male should have about 60% fluid.  An average female should have about 55% fluid.  Weight yourself in the morning and evening.  My son was a competitive fighter and used to weight before and after training.  He would then calculate the difference to see if he needed to adjust his fluid intake.  It's important to take your training clothes off before you weigh after  training, because it holds fluids and will distort the numbers.  Personally I think it's best to drink small portions through out the day, instead of one large quantity before class.  However, morning training, as previously stated doesn't allow for that.
One other note, caffiene is a mild diuretic, and will make your body release more fluid.  The effect is small and in most cases negligable.  However, if you are having difficulty maintaining your body fluid level, you might want to avoid caffiene for a few hours before training.  Otherwise caffiene can be beneficial in that it makes you more alert and gives you a slight energy boost.
As previously stated, clear urine means good hydration.  Dark or yellow urine typically means you need to intake more fluid.  If you are taking in large amounts of fluid and still have dark urine, go see your doctor.

Thanks for the advice everyone. It took a few years to realize how important proper hydration was, I always thought it was a question of my cardio. Turning out that's not the case.

Proper hydration keeps my migraines under control.  Crazy, but true.

Next you'll say that sleeping more than 5 hours a night is good for you.

I wouldn't know anything about that.

BTW: that vitacoco coconut water is good for hydration (it says) and if you get it from Amazon it's cheaper. On top of that, if you set up a monthly delivery, it's even cheaper. I got two discounts and got it under $1.80/unit. It's sells on the shelf in Philly for $2.89.

Coconut oil.  $2 a quart from walmart.  Works on the hardon and the victim.  Leaves your rape case buttery smooth.

I would also consider making sure you get some simple carbs like fruit or gatorade to boost you sugar levels back after a hard training session.  You may want to check how much sodium you are getting in the day to retain water
