Dan Gable article by John Irving
« on: February 09, 2010, 12:50:06 AM »
I heard of this article that author John Irving wrote about Dan Gable in 1973 for Esquire magazine. Next to A Season On the Mat, it is said to be the best article about amateur wrestling there is. Irving is a wrestling aficionado, and one hell of a writer. I searched all over the internet for transcripts, and couldn't find a thing. Then I found the exact magazine on ebay for $5 so I bought it. I decided there might be like minded people on here, so I scanned it. I hope you enjoy. Dan Gable should be looked up to as inspiration for any grappler, of any and all disciplines.

Wow, awesome find.  Thanks for scanning!

I had not realized that Gable experienced a serious tragedy during his teenage years.

If you liked this, you should check out John Irving's autobiography (The Imaginary Girlfriend).  He had a pretty interesting life and wrestling played a big part of it.  He wrestled Gable (and got tooled) when he was in Iowa for the writer's workshop and his mentor there was Kurt Vonnegut. Really great read!
